I don't know about you, but I love juicing! I have been juicing for many years now and the health benefits are amazing. I wanted to share with those of you who may be new to juicing or are thinking about juicing. Here's a great video (his first) with the greatest teacher on juicing the "Juiceman" Jay Kordich. The Juiceman's First Video Lecture Ever from 1986

7 Foods and Juices To Keep Your Arteries Clean!
Heart disease CAN be reversed....and it's been proven over and over and over again. Did you know that it wasn't until the mid 1990s when the American Medical Association finally surrendered by saying that diet is definitively related to heart disease? Do you know, up until then, they told their patients that heart disease was a genetic disorder and that once you got it, you were stuck with it for life? How tragic. Imagine how many people died as a result of hearing this, when in fact, when we change our diet to a low fat, high green, no animal product diet for 90 days, the results are amazing. Now, let me say, if someone has a defect in their heart valves that they were born with, this is something quite different, but for adults who have eaten poorly and need to lower their blood pressure, or risk for stroke or heart attack, abiding by these principles become life savers!
Grapefruit: It contains a type of fiber called pectin, which has been shown in animal studies to slow down the progression of atherosclerosis. As well as Grapefruit, Lemons, Limes, Apples (see below) are rich in Pectin. Pectin consumption impacts blood cholesterol levels and it help regulates blood glucose levels. It also helps remove toxins such as lead and mercury from your body.
Apples: Apples (particularly Red Delicious and Granny Smith) are also rich in procyanidins. So many of us think that the Apples such as Fuji and Winesap and other more exotic apples have more nutrients, but in fact, Red Delicious Apples are almost at the top of the charts when it comes to being the highest in nutrients. Garbanzo beans: Garbanzo beans contain both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, which help to remove cholesterol-containing bile from your body. They are also known to help prevent heart disease. We don't recommend to ever soak garbonzo beans and sprout them. They are better cooked. They release a toxin when they are sprouted which irritates the lining of our stomach. Eating garbonzo beans in salads, or use as a spread over raw foods or as a pate is the best way to use them.
Olive oil & Coconut Oil: Using virgin, organic olive oil may cut your risk of coronary heart disease almost in half, according to the CARDIO2000 case-control study, published in Clinical Cardiology. We also recommend using organic coconut oil for your cooking because the smoke point is very high, much higher than olive oil. we recommend you only use olive oil in salads or in foods where you don't have to cook. if you must cook some of your foods, cook them in organic coconut oil.
Spinach: This leafy green contains both vitamin C and vitamin A, which team up to prevent cholesterol from becoming oxidized (and thereby helping to prevent plaques from forming in your arteries). This is why I recommend JUICING spinach almost in all my tonics. Spinach is the KING of greens according to many juice therapists such as myself. Kale and the other leafy greens are special in their own way, but Spinach is also very important to use weekly, if not three times a week, especially if you suffer from HIGH CHOLESTEROL or Heart Disease.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that may make LDL cholesterol much less susceptible to becoming oxidized — again, this is the first step in the formation of plaque formation and is a major risk factor for heart disease. Juiced or cooked, the benefits of Tomatoes are fantastic.
Swiss Chard: Swiss chard is an excellent source of the antioxidant vitamin E, which helps prevent free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol. Combined with Spinach in JUICE, you've got it made. (see recipe below)
Garlic: Garlic helps your heart and arteries in numerous ways. It helps relax the muscles, it also can help eliminate cholesterol in the arteries, and it has properties in it that can kill off bacteria and fungus. It's also an excellent source to fight off an infection such as the flu or a cold. JUICED with other veggies is the best way to go. Raw is the best for to use it, because it has a chemical called Allicin that dies when its cooked, so please put it into your juices, or chop it up in your salads or pate's or dressings, especially in your home made salad dressings.
HEART HEALTHY Tonic! (organic only ~ serves 1) (please share this with those of you who suffer from heart disease). 4 cups Spinach 8 Carrots. 2 large Swiss Chard Leaves. 2 Limes (with skin if organic) 2 Apples 2 cloves Garlic (small or 1 large) 2 large Beefsteak Tomatoes (if in season)*
JUICE this tonic. Do not blend it. Carrots are almost impossible to blend but if that's all you have, (only a blender) then I recommend you cut this recipe by 60% and omit the carrots. This is just too much food for one blender, especially if you are using a Nutribullet. *Since tomatoes are not in season, you can try to find the smaller cherry like tomatoes for juicing. Our co/op here has them this time of year, but if you can't find them, just omit them until summertime and then use the beefsteak tomatoes. It's important they are ripe.
Here's to us ALL BEING HEART HEALTHY! Jay
